Tree Demossing
A DEMOSSING LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY.
TREE DEMOSSING SERVICE
JACKSONVILLE, FL
Live oaks and laurel oaks naturally play host to Florida’s native Spanish and Ball moss varieties. For healthy trees, the moss poses no real harm and they tend to self-manage moss populations. But if large amounts of moss accumulate, it is best for the overall health of the tree to thin and remove some of the moss.
If a tree is overburdened with an excess of moss it can restrict the amount of sunlight leaves receive and add weight to limbs, which could be hazardous. A tree which may already be in decline may experience overgrowth and it is definitely in the best interest of the tree’s health to demoss in order to give it a chance to recover.
At Genesis Tree Care we make it a priority to leave the foliage on the tree intact when demossing. If done by someone inexperienced in moss removal, as much as 30-60 percent of leaf loss can occur. Our technicians hand pick the moss and use only ropes to access the tree. No sprays or spikes are used in our demossing service.
We emphasize the importance of proper tree maintenance and care so you have beautiful, healthy, long-living trees on you property.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT SPANISH MOSS
Unlike mistletoe which is a parasite, Spanish and Ball mosses are actually bromeliads. These types of ‘moss’ only grow enough roots to anchor themselves to the host and don’t take any nutrients from the tree at all. They actually thrive on rain, fog, sunlight, and airborne dust and debris.
